The UseNet Newsgroups can be a valuable source of job listings BUT they do tend to be heavily weighted to jobs in high tech and technology. As well, the UseNet is probably the area of the 'Net with the highest scam to legit offer ratio, so exercise caution and common sense. That being said, may of the continent's (and the world's) top personnel firms regularly use the UseNet to find qualified applicants for their positions and many legitimate businesses realize that the UseNet is a good way to target job postings to people with specific interests or to those wishing to work in a specific geographic area.
CareerMosaic UseNet Search
A *forms* type UseNet search for employment around the world, courtesy of CareerMosaic, another meta-site worth exploring. In any case, this might be the easiest way to search the UseNet for job listings.Although the above site is top-notch, easiest isn't always best--and searching the UseNet using the search engine provided by CareerMosaic does mean that you may not become as aware as you might of the wonderful networking potential of the UseNet.
With that in mind, we list below all sorts of work related UseNet groups. If your browser's Newsreader is set up, clicking a link will open it. If it isn't, you can always download a very good (free) UseNet Newsreader program NXNews here or go to NoNags Newsreaders to see some other options. In any case, here's the list of work related Newsgroups.
Note also:
Your server may not carry all the newsgroups. If it doesn't, see the last two paragraphs below. As well, some of these groups are used to post resumes. Look first, though, because it's considered poor form to post resumes in some newsgroups.
Also--be creative. The UseNet has lots of newsgroups that are sorted by interest, so one option is to read newsgroups about subjects you find interesting and which relate to fields in which you might like to work. DejaNews or Supernews allow you to search interest or job-related newsgroups (a number of different ways) if you don't have your own Newsreader program.
Use the interest newsgroups to network with people who share your interests and look for appropriate positions. It's considered fair game to let folks know you're looking for work in the field in interest newsgroups.
